Comment Milestone

So I/we have made someone angry.  I got my first angry comment recently.  Really angry.  Of course it was posted anonymously too, so I don’t mind sharing it.  There’s some pretty bad language, so stop reading now if that sort of thing bothers you.

Angry comments don’t really bother me.  I’m a really strong free speech advocate, so it always bothers me to some degree if I have to moderate a comment.  I’d really like to know what both readers and other website owners think about moderating these comments.

LOL at this poor guy.  He’s angry because people are interested in free stuff for SWTOR.  Nevermind that all this stuff is legitimately given away to begin with, or that SWTOR wasn’t going to survive with a subscription based model.  But I digress, that’s not what I want to talk about here.

Every site is different.  Maybe some site owners allow angry comments like this.  I’m curious as to how both owners and readers would like to see comments like this handled.  For now, this one’s getting deleted.  That’s my plan for anyone that can’t state a differing opinion with a at least a little civility.  I’d still like to know what you think in the comments.  Do you like to see these comments allowed or deleted?

    1. I noticed there have been a lot of trolls out recently. One in the Ootinicast (SWTOR podcast) chatroom last week, and one in the Tales of Citizens (Star Citizen podcast) chatroom around the same time.

I also remember you telling me you were going to have more time on your hands now.

  1. I think comments like that should be deleted (on any site worth reading anyway) because the kind of comments you allow reflect on you as a site owner, in the sense that if you left something like that up, it would make it look like you’re okay with that kind of “discourse”. Not to mention that comments like that tend to derail discussions, as people tend to feel the need to respond somehow.

Free speech is for public spaces. You don’t want people shouting obscenities in your living room.

    1. I really like your free speech rule there. I’d never thought of it that way before. Derailing discussions is another valid point. It’s just a little part of me that feels bad for deleting someone’s comment. Especially when it’s a dissenting one.

Feel like adding something?
